Engine test stands?

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone has built a stand for testing motors before dropping them into the tractor. I have a couple engines kicking around, and i was thinking it would be nice to mount them onto something to find out what works/doesn't without having to dismantle a working tractor. anyone done this? how did you go about it?

Seems to me all you'd really need is something to secure it to (metal plate, 2x12, anything will work), a source of fuel (I'd suspend a small tank above the motor), a 12v battery and something to crank the motor (screwdriver, extra swtich, etc.).

Would be a pretty cool idea if you would use it enough :beerchug:

My motors always run when I put them in. :biggrin2:

if you have a junk parts tractor sitting around just cut off the front of the frame and weld some legs to it.

That's...that's actually a really really good idea! I've got an old frame laying around I couldn't figure out for the life of me what to do with and that is a perfect idea. BTW, it doesn't matter that I never really have any engines that I need to test but still, it's a tool in my shop I don't have so I must build it. And you know what they say; if you build it, they will come :biggrin2:

I bolt them to the motor plate then clamp the plate to my work bench, hook a temp fuel and electric system and fire them up. The diesels are a little more complicated to deal with but I also do them.

I seen one on another forum years back. It was custom built and Neat.

Doesn't matter, either way.

I was actually intending to try this, I recently aquired another 125 that I haven't decided what to do with yet, and started to try this without chopping it up so i could use it for a future project, but I stalled out on this project because te wiring had LOTS of problems, and I didn't want to dump a lot of money into something I didn't know what to do with yet. But, my 72 will need a new harness, so maybe I'll buy it early and use it for a test bed for a bit. I've got a pair of k301's lying around that seem to be good, an my neighbor says he has a k241 for me, so I'd like to have a known good system to test them on before tearing into them. Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Nice setup there, Sam!
