CH-16 carburator cleaning/rebuild

hello,

i'm about ready to remove the carb on the 2002 cub 2166 which i just bought. it set for two years without being run...no pre-shutdown maintenance from what i can tell.

turns over and coughs everyonce in a while, but won't start and run.

drained the tank, new fuel filter. fuel pump works okay. cleaned the pre-air filter and oiled it. i ordered a carb. rebuild kit from local dealer. the engine is the kohler ch-16.

i've looked at the tutorials and other advice offered here.

can i field strip the carb and soak it in cleaner or will i destroy the fuel intake needle valve seat? i haven't pulled the carb. off the engine yet.

any other helpful assembly, disassembly advice welcomed

thanks

bill

I am cheap so I would just take it apart, blow it out, shoot carb cleaner through the main jet and low speed passage and the needle/seat and put it back together with the old parts, assuming they are still in good condition.

a fuel inlet needle can cause allot of running issues. they can also fill your crankcase with fuel. they usually come with the rebuild kit. its up to you what kind of work you want to do or if you don't mind doing it over if it cause's problems. if time is an issue which it usually is for me just do it right the first time and be done with it.
you can just take the carbs apart and clean the passages with carb cleaner and compressed air if the gas isn't varnish

If I had a business working on other people's small engines, I'd do it right by the book. Wouldn't shortcut anything or take a chance on giving anyone a break.

That includes carburetors and engine rebuilds/refurb.

When I'm working for myself, I like to see what works and what doesn't.:IH Trusted Hand:

still won't run

i got the carb. rebuild kit and cleaned the carb pretty thoroughly....field stripped it and used aerosol carb cleaner to clean the passages, throat, etc. checked the backfire solenoid and it worked fine. reassembled and still won't start. it will run briefly if i inject carb cleaner into to carb. inlet.

i removed the plug, hooked it up,and grounded it to the frame. spark was there, but seemed pretty feeble. the plug is clean..almost new looking and gapped at .030.

the battery is old and i have put it on the charger for an hour or two each time i try to start it. it will crank for a couple of minutes (10 seconds on...30 second rest or so...i'm letting the starter rest in between)

the plug has not been very wet when i removed it after a round of cranking.

ideas? recommendations?

thanks

bill

kohler command ch-16 with 162 hours. i'll change the oil and filter as soon as i can get it to run and warm up.

1: make sure you are getting gas into the carb.
2: you should hear the shutdown solenoid click when you turn the key to the run position.
3: will it run if you squirt some gas into the throat of the carb?
4: you may need to disassemble the carb and soak if, these things have some very small holes that plug easily. I use some very small hobby drills to clean them.
5: you should download the service manual for the engine from the Kohler web site. This is the link.

Here is a place selling a new carb for what looks like a good price.

still at it...

thanks, pretty much have done all that.

spark looks weak when i remove the plug from the engine and ground it against the block, but i'm not sure what it should look like/sound like

it will start and run a few seonds when i shoot carb cleaner into the carb.

i'm going to walmart and get a new battery and plug...even though the plug looks pretty good.

back when i try these repairs...

If it fires and runs on carb cleaner you have a fuel delivery issue. You missed something when you cleaned the carb.

You know it uses a magneto right? Battery has nothing to do with spark..... it generates it's own electric for the plugs.

It's not the battery. It isn't getting fuel.

Does the key power the fuel shut off in the start position? (My bet is no.)
Disconnect the starter and hold the key in the start position and check to see if it puts power to the shut off in the start position.

That, or you have a safety switch issue...... which is easy to get around for diagnostic purposes also.
