M18 or CH18 for 682 repower?
I picked up 682 on the cheap yesterday because it has a bad kt17. I was originally planning to use it as a parts tractor, but it is in too good of condition to do that. I've seen posts about using the m18 and ch18 engines for a repower, my main question is: is one of them easier to work with than the other? Mounting, connecting driveshaft, wiring, muffler placement, etc.

Personally, I'd go with a Command engine. They are newer so parts will be a little easier/cheaper to come by. As good as the Mag's are (and they are good motors), they are becoming obsolete and quite pricey to work on. As for wiring/mounting/installing, you are going to be in about the same boat with both. You'll have to do some wiring, get/fab a drive shaft, and whatever else comes along. Either way, you'll have a good machine :beerchug:

The 18mag will bolt right in,same driveshaft, you will have to change your wiring, thats all. ch18 you need to redo everything.

I'd drop a V twin in but I'd go for the CH25

Do you have an engine? If not there is a ch23 fer like 1400 dollars brand new on the web. IIRC the commands are cheaper to overhaul down the road.

Wow, they don't give the ch25's away. Lol I may have a lead on kt17 that is a good rebuild prospect. If that works out, I'll just try taking it to a shop and have it rebuilt professionally. If not I'll probably lean towards the ch series. Thanks everyone for your time and input. I'll let you know how it turns out.
P.s. I know it is not IH, but hopefully you guys can see why I couldn't just scrap her. |
Looks like a good foundation for a repower. Congrats on the find. Let us know what you decide to use to breathe life back into the old girl. :beerchug:
