Am I crazy
So I have a1712 I bought 2 years ago that was a basket case. Didn't run when I got it but it only took about 30 minutes to get it going when I got home with it. However it smokes really bad. I replaced the KT 17 with a mag 18. Currently has a Mag 18 in it and everything works as it should. Its not a worker, just have it because they aren't very plentiful. I would like to rebuild the KT 17 so I can keep it original, and yes I know it is costly to do this. SOOO am I crazy for taking this approach? The overall condition of the tractor is pretty good.

I think so. But, it's your tractor. I don't see the value of the "original motor". Doesn't affect it's dollar value any, only viewed opinion. In another 30 years it may..... but I doubt it. Once the hood is shut and the side panels on, they all look the same. If the Mag runs good, leave it in. When it dies, repower it again.

If you want to rebuild the KT it is a choice only you can make. Dollar wise I wouldn't but if you just want to for personal reasons then go for it. I know that didn't answer your question. :beerchug:

Can you even get parts for the KT's anymore? I was thinking stuff like the rods and pistons were NLA?
