Engine oil "shelf life"
Can anyone tell me if engine oil has a shelf life. I have a case of Castrol 10W-40,GTX anti sludge formula, API service SM. It's been stored in a cool dry place for approximately 5 years.
In all the oil related threads I've read here, I don't recall any discussion on this topic. Any oil experts here know the answer ? Chris |
Oil was in the ground for thousands of years before they heated it up and put it in bottles..... I think your fine. 5 years isn't that long. Might shake it up a little in case some of the additives settled out.

Thank you Jonathan. I should have mentioned it was the additives that I was mainly concerned with. Thanks again.

realistically as long as its sealed it should last forever, like jon said just shake it up.

I will surely give it a good shake. Thanks Tim.

Shelf life
I would check the The Engine Oil Bible first, or do a search on engine oil Shelf life ( Trust but verify)
This is from ExxonMobil's Shelf life represents the time period during which a stored product, such as Lubricating Oils and Greases, can continue to be used without quality-control checks to verify performance attributes. Shelf life recommendations for ExxonMobil’s Lubricating Oils and Greases are provided as guidance for our customers and distributors. Shelf life recommendations apply to lubricants that have been stored in their original, sealed containers under proper conditions. However, at the end of the shelf life period, ExxonMobil recommends laboratory testing (recertifi cation) to ensure that the product will continue to provide the promised performance in the intended application. “Short” and “Normal” Shelf Life Products Normal Shelf Life: In general, the recommended shelf life for oils and greases is typically five years when stored properly in the original sealed containers. |
