Sudden Hearing Loss...
Anyone ever heard of this, or worst, have it?
I went to sleep Friday night just like any other night and woke up Saturday deaf in my left ear.
I mean deaf, nothing. Figured what ever it was it would go away by the end of the day. Wife went on the inerweb and found out some disturbing things I wasn't ready to hear. (ha,ha)
So on Sunday morning things were unchanged so I went into the ER and see if anything was wrong, like maybe wax build up, or........ Everything checked out fine, nothing was unusual as far as the ear looked. ER Dr. told me to make an appointment with a specialist on Mon.
Called them at 8:00 am Monday morning and was told to get here as soon as I could, sounded pretty bad if they were getting me in "right away". Got down to the Dr.'s office and they took me into a soundproof booth and did a bunch of hearing tests on both ears. Right ear is 80% which is normal for someone my age that's been around the noises I've been for 52 years.
Left ear, nothing! All I could do was feel the sound if that makes any sense? From there went to talk with the Dr. and he said he's been practicing Ears, Nose and Throat for 30 years and used to get about two cases a year and now he's seeing almost one a week. Unexplainable, no scientific explanation for it. People go to sleep and wake up deft in one ear. There is a window of 48 hours where they like to start the person on oral Steroids, that's why they wanted me in so soon. But the steroids are the only thing they've found that helps restore the chances of permanent hearing loss. only a small chance at best he said.
So need to do this for a week to ten days then follow up with him. If there is no improvement they will make a small incision in the ear drum and inject steroids a maximum of three times to see if that helps. At best we're hoping to regain some hearing, hopefully enough to at least have a hearing aid to hear some out of the ear. Because right now there's nothing. Except a very annoying buzzing sound.
If none of this works they'll do a MRI and see if there is some type of tumor pushing on a nerve, but that's only a 1-100,000 chance I guess.
Anyway, has anyone ever heard of such a thing, or had a experience with it?
Thanks
Boy this year is starting out as bad as last year ended:bash2::BlahBlah::BlahBlah:

if theres a 1 in 100,000 chance its a tumor id push for the mri now and not in 10 days. my friend lost his dad a few years ago to cancer, on day he woke up feeling weird so he went to the hospital and they told him he had cancer and 5 days later he was gone. at the very least id see another doc for a 2nd opinion.

I don't know any facts about your problem except this .....everyone on this forum is pulling for ya......hopefully it comes back on it's own. In the meantime point that ear towards politicians and you'll have good results. prayers going up!

Guess the steroids are for imflamtion and swelling. I've never had what you are having. Years ago when I first bought my 45acp after shooting it a few times with no ear muffs my ears rang for 3 hrs, never again! Thoughts and prayers zippy! Hope it you get better soon!

I have this sometimes when my wife asks me to do stuff around the house :biggrin2:

Sorry, not making light of this but thought it might make you laugh a little. As with everyone else here, I hope for the best and that you are ok :)

You will be in my prayers also, Todd. I agree-I would push for the MRI now.
