I took a short video of my 1942 Monarch CK 12 lathe making a couple of cuts at a 1/4" deep in steel.

What kind of inserts do you use? .008-.010 per ?

CNMG432 @ .012 per rev The rpm was 408

I use wnmg on turning just cause of six sides. Iscar PP chip breakers.
