Sealant
 

In rebuilding the M-18s the book calls for certain sealants to use when joining the case halves and attaching the jugs and this is what I always used. At work we use a sealant to attach the flywheel housing to the engine blocks and air inlet housings to the intake on Cat engines. The tube says it is a flexable form in place sealant for high vibration and high pressure use. I wonder if this would be better than what the book calls for since it was not available when the book was printed.

What do you use and what are your opinions?

Use what works. You use the stuff at work all the time..... but neither one of the applications you listed are oil related. So.... do you know how it will handle being in a constant oil bath? You don't give a name of the stuff...... If the Kohler stuff works and you know it does, stay with it.


On another note.... you put sealant on flywheel housings? They are dry housings. Why do they need a sealant? Never in my life, ever put sealant on a dry flywheel housing. :Huh:

Just my 2 cents but if it's good enough for the big kitty cats it should be good enough for a Kohler. More info on both products would be helpful in definitely saying yes or no. :bigthink:

The 3126B is not a dry housing.The housing seals to the back of the block and the seal mounts in the housing itself. If you do not use sealant between the housing and block you have a very large oil leak.

Sam it is a Permatex product in a red tube but the sealant is bright blue. Next time I get some in I will get a number off the package. I have two more to build so I figure it will not be long before I see the stuff again.
I figured if it could stand the vibration of the engine and 35punds of boost at the intake it must be pretty good stuff.

Didn't think about that engine. Yep, just like the DT466's. They used a gasket though. I was thinking the dry adapter housings. I took one off a Cummins the other day. It was a dry housing and it was silicon'd on. Couldn't figure out why they did that..... Oh well.

I use Yam-a-bond made to seal engine cases, available @ any Yamaha dealer.
I'm sure Honda makes an equivalent also.
Never had one leak, good stuff.
Just make sure mating surfaces are clean and free of oil and lightly coat both case halves, then assy.

Cat does not sell the gasket any more. They just sent a tube of the Permatex stuff in the kit. Same way with the intake heater gaskets.

I use the permatex grey on honda transmissions, where hondabond is called for. works great, been using it for years. they run no gasket, just the grey stuff. never had a problem. we've glued on diff covers in rockcrawlers, had the lips all peeled up from wheelin, and still had to pry them off after all the bolts are out. pretty strong stuff.

Yeah that Ultra Grey is good stuff. International and Ford use it on the rear main seal carrier. It can be a booger to get that thing pried loose.
