Added one to the herd

Well.....I've been bitten by Cub fever (as many of us have) based on my experiences growing up & mowing with Dad's old 1650, and later 1811, and my Uncle's 1811. Picked up one of my other Uncle's red 782 about 15 yrs ago, with a blown series 1.....never got an engine into, and it's too far gone. A year & a half ago I picked up my own red 782, which got me going, and I later added an 1861 last spring, and an 86 last fall. Fast forward to this spring, and through the past couple winters, I really wanted a hydro angle plow (you know where this is going)....
A few weeks back I posted about if a Cub would fit in a short-bed, and I was really after the 582 that J-Mech posted a few weeks back....guy initially emailed back & forth with me, then never replied? Anyway ended up finding a yellow & white 782 with front hydraulics. Emailed back & forth with the guy, and he texted me pretty quick, so we made a deal.....
Anyway, he stated 8 out of 10, a 9 with a new seat, etc etc, sounded like a real nice tractor, 50" deck, 3 out of 4 hubcaps, good paint, electrical, no dents, low hours, minor scratches from use, 84 model.....but he wasn't sure if series 1 or 2, and had cast rear end...but his price seemed reasonable, so I tried to make a deal to get it today (Saturday).
Turns out he doesn't get off work until 6, & I have a 40 yr birthday party for my best man tonight....
Ends up being a banzai overnight trip....Left about 630pm last night and back in about 430am today....fiancé is out of town, so I was able to squeeze it in.
Anyway on to some pics

Here she is! Can see the little 86 in the background, was my plowing rig this winter

Cast diff, internal brake

Serial is 706125....which makes it an 82? Makes sense with the diff. Edit: forgot to mention, it has the old IH clock style hourmeter on it too.
She's relatively clean, more like a 6-7 in my mind. I guess that's a perspective thing though. Oh, I asked the guy to email/text me more pics in the afternoon, and they showed up about an hour after I left his house with it in my truck.
I haven't checked the numbers but it looks like a series 1. Has the square fill plug. Has IH cast diff with internal brake (which is my personal preference). Has a 44C deck (I guess that means a 50C is actually, what a 54 since that's what they measure?) with the right rear wheel bracket repaired, but it looks solid, and seems to be a good fix. Runs fairly good really, but I think I'm going to swap the S1 for an S2 I have here.
Unfortunately I think this means one (at least) of the fleet has to go, I'm leaning towards cutting my 86 loose, leaving me with 2 7's and the 1861, and a parts 1811 & 782 (which is about tapped out). Originally the 61 was going to be a parts donor for the red 7, but about $200 and a day of TLC turned it into a GREAT mowing machine, so I never tore it down. I kind of like my little 86 too, I'm going to have to make some kind of a deal with my Dad I think...

I just noticed the yellow pedestal? Anyone seen one painted that way before? I didn't think this tractor had a repaint in the past but could be wrong.

J-Mech 03-19-2015 11:23 PM

Brian,
I somehow missed this post. Very nice machine!

I don't know that they ever painted the pedestal yellow.... :bigthink: But in '82 it would be an early CCC machine, so maybe? Still has the cast rear. Technically, you have a 784.

On the deck, you say it's a 44C, but then say it's a 50C. Should be a tag on the deck. If it's a 44, then it's a 44" cut, 50C is 50" cut. It's one or the other, not both. Yes, the 44" deck is a little larger than 44" but still only cuts a 44" swath. (I think you get the idea.) Nice find!!! :beerchug:

Brian,
my ccc 582 is yellow also.

nice 782!

Glad to see another yellow pedestal. Its a 44c deck, but he advertised it as a 50" deck (he measured overall width I'm assuming). Its a pretty straight tractor & I can't wait to use it!

Congrats on the dual hydraulic :beerchug: they are great with the hydraulic angle added to the push blade for moving snow:ThumbsUp:

Lew, you always know all the "oddball" stuff!! :beerchug:

Nice find, those are my favorite style of cubs. I have the 1712 and 1812 with the front ports. My son and I made the brackets to mount to the blade so we can have angle adjust, just haven't got around to mounting them yet. Any how good luck with the new cub.

As far as I know all mowers overall width is more than the cut width. My 54 in cut mower actually measures about 57 inches overall width.
