Oil useage
I have a cub 1210 that has the mag 12 engine in it. Engine sounds and runs strong, no funny sounds to it and not a trace of smoke anytime, not even at start up. Problem is, when you mow for about 3 hours and then check your oil level, its low. The only thing I can think of is the crankcase breather filter needs replaced. I haven't tore into it yet, thought I would check with the experts first to see if I am on the right track.

It's leaking or burning. Check behind all the tin for oil leaks too. It can be hidden.
Check for oil in your air cleaner which would indicate that oil is getting sucked up into there to be burned in the form of mist. Unfortunately that's usually means rings are starting to go. I'd say run it and keep the oil topped up. |

Cant remember for sure how low it was, but I do know it was low enough on the dip stick that I felt it needed some. I am going off memory as this was last year. Its not my main mower just a backup. I do run Pennzoil 30wt.

Why don't you use it some this year and find out for sure how much it's burning. Since your going off of memory, maybe it isn't as bad as you remember.

Engine/tractor is really clean, im kinda picky about that. Tractor does run at WOT when mowing and the engine is clean no leaks anywhere. As far as worn rings, I was under the impression that you would have a lack of power/visible smoke when running. It seemed like I have heard that if the breather filter was bad, you would consume oil. Am I right on my assumption and what I heard about the filter?
