Power steering
 

Question about the power steering on the 82 series supers. This is my first one so I don't know what to expect from it. Let's say if I'm driving and want to make a nice long right turn. Even if I hold the steering wheel to the right, the wheels will start to straighten out on there own after a second or two so then I have to keep turning the wheel more to the right to continue my turn. And, I'm not making a very sharp turn to where the steering cylinder is bottoming out or anything. I don't think I have air in the system, the hydro is nice and strong and doesn't act funny, the lift is nice and strong and maintains its lift with a plow hooked up to it also. I'm thinking maybe the power steering cylinder is not holding it's pressure inside maybe due to bad orings or something? The power steering unit itself was recently rebuilt and not leaking so I think that's fine.

Your cylinder is bleeding off. Replace only. Used or $156 new from Cub.

I don't know if you can view that or not....old.

But I contact the seller as I was interested in a couple of things including this cylinder....seller would not combine shipping.....I told him I ain't paying $40 shipping when it all will fit in a $13 flat rate box...anyway I told him to pound sand.

So this fool pays darn near the price of new one when you include shipping.....go figure....I would never have bid that up anyway.

Holy moly, your right that's insane. I would have just bought a new one.

Couple of things at play here-

One is things sell in cycles, patience is the key. I paid $65 for my used cylinder but IIRC there were a couple for sale and no one really wanted to bid up at that time. I think sometimes guys think there will never be another one available and they get into a frenzy over the one item.

Secondly, guys are spending PP bucks and it's easier to spend a couple of more PP bucks than it is to wait 4 days for the bank transfer and send MO or check. Plus it's instant...couple of clicks and sit back and wait for it to show up.

Actually I'm considering that today. I need new rings and seals and gaskets, etc....for a M18 I blew a few days ago. I went to NAPA yesterday and got prices, I could save about $25 ordering Kohler parts through NAPA....but....I got some PP bucks...soooooo.....

I have tried to do some business with that ebay seller also. As I am building my super piece by piece. Your story about him sounds just about spot on to the experience I had with him.

I will stick to Patton Acres , he is a real good guy.

FWIW:
If it were mine, I would disconnect the lines coming from the steering unit and block them.
Then run the tractor and turn the steering wheel.
There should be very very little slippage of the wheel(almost none) as it would be when the steering is turned fully to the left or right in a normal operating tractor.
If it excessively slips, it is the steering unit, not the cylinder.
That way you know where the problem is, and won't spend unneeded $$$ on a cyl. if it is good.

I'll grab a couple hyd caps from work and test it in the morning.

And you should. However as you describe it it's the cylinder. Same thing happened to my 1872 when I had it. The PS valve is directional, turn it one way and one side opens, turn it the other.....

Another way to test is lock it to the right and then ever so slowly continue to turn the wheel right, if it continues to turn.....now lock to the left....if it continues to turn.....it's the cylinder.
