Starter generator overcharges--fixed
Hello--Recently I posted a problem with the S/G overcharging on a CC 127. I ended up taking both my S/Gs and all 3 V/Rs to a different auto electric rebuild facility for evaluation. The problem was------- the V/R.!!! Not defective, but incompatible with a S/G. The "cheapie" V/Rs are electronic, although they are physically identical to the original units.The electronic units will not properly regulate the voltage/current on a S/G, which only has ONE field coil for charging. Thus, the high (full -fielded) charging rate.
They will work fine on a generator only charging system, even though on the Internet they are advertised as working on generators and S/G s. The correct V/R for 12 volt S/G application on Cub Cadets is Delco Remy mechanical V/R # 231-12004 (Made in USA). |

I never saw a "cheap" electronic voltage regulator. What were the part numbers from Tractor supply? I have converted replacement Delco 10si regulators to work on a SG. The one field coil should not cause the regulator to full field. If you can, take a photo of the regulators with the tops removed. I would be interested in what is in those regulators.

Did you replace it with a Delco Remy V/R and it's good now? I've been to tsc and haven't found the correct one for our cubs so I've never bought one. They were all 6 volt jobs at my TSC. Anyway thank you for posting your answer, we appreciate you letting us know the end result. I am doing a "renew" on one of my originals and purchased an old Delco VR on purpose. If you look at the internals on them there's a reason they last 40 plus years as opposed to the Chinesium junk ones they build now. Thanks again for the information I'm with Roland (although quite the stiff reply) that if you were using an electronic one that would have been really good info to have as I'm not sure there's a solid state V/R out there that has worked on our stuff yet with S/G's |
To my knowledge there is only one V/R that is a solid state.... and it IS NOT CHEAP! I find it tough to believe that it is a solid state and cheap.
Yes, that info would have been good to know. I do remember asking if it was the correct regulator and you said it was. If you don't give full and accurate information it is tough to help you, and very frustrating on our end. |

We are all new to many things @ one time,and this one just added to everyone's knowledge base. Remembering my first "electronic" reg. experience in the 1970's. Took the cover off to see nothing in the way of coils/points WTF? I thought,no adjustment here Ha,LOL! Dad always said: Believe nothing of what you read and 1/2 of what you see :biggrin2: |
Well, thank you for your responses!! After reading them, I took the cover off one of the Internet V/R's (which I had not done previously), and, lo and behold, it was NOT ELECTRONIC, as I was told by the repair shop, but mechanical. Upon seeing that, I called the repair shop and spoke to the manager, and he informed me that he was wrong, and that they were in fact mechanical V/R's , but defective right out of the box, and were causing a full field condition. so-- an easy job made hard because of defective, new parts, just as many of you (myself included) suspected. The system charges normally now.

As a mechanic and now at the parts store, I have seen many defective parts, most of them right out of the Made in China box. Sold deck bearings to a guy last year for his mower, he bought all four 6203 sealed bearings, one had no grease at all evidently, lasted about 30 seconds he said.
