KT-17 uses oil

I've included a pic for identification purposes, can you tell if it's a KT-17?

The seller says the engine runs well, doesn't smoke or leak oil, but it does use oil. They say they add some each time before they mow. I'm looking for an experienced opinion as to what it could be? Is there something about this engine that is common for oil consumption?

Well.... the air breather says it is. It also says Series II. I see a point cover and a coil, so I'm gonna say it is.


All the standard stuff that causes oil consumption.


Same as any engine.



Oil consumption causes:

Worn rings
Worn cylinders
Bad piston
Bad crankcase vent
Blown head gasket
Oil leak at any gasket, seal or orifice possible.
Wrong oil
Bad fuel pump (leaks gas into the motor and makes it thin, thus easier to get past rings.)

Thanks J-Mech for the reply. I was hoping for a common problem instead of the normal problems, but no such luck. Is this engine expensive to rebuild?

Sorry for asking so many silly questions, but I have nobody to ask about these type of things and I don't put much faith in random info from the internet, but I do trust you guys on this forum. And the shops around don't seem to care about anything that isn't a $3,000 zero turn. I'm probably the only guy within a few miles with a steering wheel on my mower lol.

Not many parts available either. Not in the way of over-sized pistons/rings and undersized rods. Plus, even the gasket kit is $$$. Cheaper to repower than rebuild.

J mech is spot on as usual.
If you are not mowing much, a little oil is not a big deal and if the price is right.
I do like that series, is it a cast rear? ( usually red was cast, black was Aluminum) any accessories? what is he asking? if I may be so bold.
I do see the muffler shrouding is missing.

I would ask the owner what type of oil he is adding. If he says a multi-grade, like a 10w-30, the oil loss maybe due to that reason. Kohler recommends a straight grade 30 weight, otherwise there will be oil loss.

Thanks again for the replies, and I least I gained some knowledge from posting this, but I probably won't be getting the 682 this engine is in.

He is one of them sellers that is never available. I asked if I could come over and look at it one night and he had other plans, no big deal, that stuff happens. The annoying part is that I was supposed to go look at it 2 days later after the guy got off work, so I hooked to my trailer and drove 110 miles and bought a nice 46" mower deck for $150 that I planned to use with the 682 then he cancelled and said he wasn't available. The next day I found a good deal on a zero turn and bought that. So I wasted 220 miles, gas money, a day off work, and $150 on a deck I'm never going to use because somebody puts something on Craigslist but is too busy to actually sell it. Funny thing is, this was a guaranteed sale if all it could do was get on the trailer. It would have been nice if he'd cancelled BEFORE I got to his side of the state at our meeting time. Sorry for the rant, but inconsiderate people like this really get me :bash2::angry::Swear::Swear::Swear::mad:
