#1 Tiller to a 149

Need some help. Need to buy a belt for the tiller to front pto. Chart says belt is 143.8 inches. I just used a rope to measure the distance and it came to 138 ". The mule drive I am using is for a 38" deck. This mule drive has a pulley on the left (looking from front) that is spring loaded. The pulley on the right is adjustable with a threaded rod. In what position are the pulleys to be when taking measurements? I measured with both pulleys moved back toward the rear of tractor. Belts are expensive and I don't want to err. Thanks for your help and have a great day.

The pulley with a spring needs to have the spring removed and a threaded adjuster added to it just like the other side. The pulleys should not be pushed back to get your length.

Here is the manual for a #1 tiller and it should give you all the information you need.

Thanks Dwayne, I have the manual printed but I did not see exactly what I was looking for. Will take another look.

You want the mule drive pulleys to be even across, not one ahead of the other and no slack in the belt, it should be pretty tight. If the belt slips as you are using it then tighten each pulley equally till the slipping stops.
