S/G rebuild shops
My starter/generator locked up on me the other day. Boy does that make a lot of smoke! Fortunately I was off the tractor when it started to happen and I noticed the smoke and started towards the controls when it actually locked and started to lose RPMs. I can't believe the belt is not worse than it is. Anyways, the only good local shop closed a few years back. Can anyone recommend a shop to rebuild these units? I searched but did not really find much.
Thanks! |
Go to a local mechanic shop. Independent ones are the best. They may be able to recommend a place. Sometimes parts stores know of places, and so do a lot of heavy equipment dealers. I can recommend several..... in Illinois, but I'm not sure that helps you any. :biggrin2:

I dont know of any good shops near you. But if yer the adventurous type. I'd open it up and see what made it lock. Brush/bearing kits are cheap. I've redone a few myself

Open it up and see, but if you've let the smoke out, I don't know that you're going to be able to fix it yourself.
Good Luck. |
Generators and starters I typically don't open up since 9 times out of 10 the armature needs turned and the segments undercut, etc. So I just usually go ahead and go to a shop that has does a complete job. Unless its stupid expensive and then I threw a set of brushes in and try to get a little more time.
I did find a shop that was recommended to me in the next town over that I pass through everyday. I will give them a whirl. Thanks! |
