Does your deck hang low, does it wobble to and fro?
 

As the title suggests, this thread is about your deck size and if you let it hang or ride on the caster wheels.

I see this around a lot on here and other forums and the answer seems to vary from person to person. This made me want to get a better idea of how everyone sets their deck up.

So share your deck size, machine, and if you let it ride on the casters or hang from the subframe.

I have a 54GT on my 2284 (and 1864 before that) and in both situations I set have had the deck ride/hang on the subframe. Seems to me that (at least with the decks I've had thus far, never had a Haban and I hear they are a different beast) I'd rather have the stress on the subframe that I can get welded if it breaks than have the deck bouncing around on the ground.

So what are your guys' thoughts on this and how do you have your equipment set up? :bigthink:

Note: I tried to keep the poll fairly simple while including all sizes of decks and setup types. :beerchug:

60" haban on the casters. doesn't really lift up much higher anyhow,and it will sneak down after a few minutes anyway.

I have 7-8 second design Cyclops tractors with the 48"/54" deck. I set them up the same as you describe. I don't like worn gauge wheels and I don't like that deck bouncing along on my rough lawns.

My deck wheels just dance on the hard, high spots on the ground. I don't run into fireplugs and bend the s.... out of the mower carriage either. Don't run into immoveable objects and knock the plastic front ends off either.

I use a deck that easily weighs double the weight of a 60" Haban,,

It is a 72" cut deck,,, :bigeyes:

It rolls on the four tires, and, has never been an issue,,, :bigthink:

The machine is about Cub Cadet 1872 vintage.

I have a 60" Haban for the 2284, and I would only mow with it rolling on the ground, if I ever mow with it,,,

I get a much better cut with the deck rolling,,, :biggrin2:

the deck I use most is a 42" with the gauge wheels on back, I run it on the higher side because I have a lot of rocks that surface randomly throughout the year, no matter how many times I comb the yard. I preferred my 38" with the skids over the gauge wheels because it gave a nicer cut, but my shell is done for.

44C hanging under a 149. It has the gauge wheels but I call them anti-scalp wheels. I mow with it almost as high as it goes, and in June, July, and August I mow as high as it goes and want more.

I use my 60" Haban and let it ride. I level it out to the height I want my grass with the casters on the ground. Same for my 44C deck.

I run mine on the 1330 (lawn tractor) with 44" deck on the ground and it cuts great, and nothing is worn out. Been doing it this way since 1992. Replaced front wheels three times.
50" on the 1650 most times on the ground. 782 with 44" off the ground or the anti-scalps will dig in.
122 off the ground, for the same reason. I KNOW I've read they are not supposed to be run on the ground, but to me it's a better looking cut when it's done.
