Trans mount bolt length

2 Attachment(s)
I started the "Standard Maintenance" on the 1864 I picked up on Saturday. It is a low hour machine (514 hr) but hasn't been cared for very well in the past and has most of the issues of a neglected Cyclops., bad plastic, lack of grease, bad spindle bearings, play in the steering and broken mount bolts on the trans. Of the 4 bolts 3 are missing and the 4th is broken at the threads. I can't seem to find a parts blow up that shows those bolts, anybody know off the top of their head know the length , they appear to be 3/8" coarse thread but I don't know if they are a standard length.

I did look there but I didn't know if that was the correct bolt, it isn't shown on the diagram and doesn't have an item number, I guess I'm not as smart as you Jersey boys. Thanks Sam for the info, while I have the axle tubes off I'm going to drill the oil return hole, I seem to remember 3/8" dia. , is one hole one each side sufficient? I was asking the question on the length because the one broken bolt that was still there is a grade 8 not the grade 5 in the parts list it also has 2" unthreaded under the head which means it was a 3" bolt. Maybe someone has been inside this unit before, someone that shouldn't be allowed to have tools.

You never know what you'll run into till you get inside it. One 3/8" hole is enough. You may want to stick a set of braces on it while you're at it. 1864 would use the GT set. 3" bolts probably are OK, pull the rear cover and you can double check.

Is the carrier different on an 1864? On my 1872, the boss on the top two bolts is longer and takes a 3/8-16 X 3.0 Lg GR8. Something else to consider checking is the cone bearings on the differential. One of mine was chewed up pretty bad.

GT braces already on order along with Aaron's new Sam Mac inspired rear cover.

Maybe the top bolts are 3" center is the same as your 1872 except for the gear ratio. Tubes are the later Cyclops style.:beerchug:

Thanks for the heads up on the cone bearings, I will inspect the entire assembly since it is obvious there has been lack of preventive maintenance on this machine. Your observation concerning the length of the upper bolts on the carrier is about what I calculated based on the piece of I took out of one of those holes. The markings on the head of that bolt indicated Grade 8 There is about 1" to 1 1/8" of the broken bolt left in the casing and the
and about 2" of the bolt that I took out of the hole.

I just did this repair about a month ago, so it's still fresh in my mind. Just make sure you make a note of the orientation of the ring gear (left or right side of the case) and keep left and right shims separated.
