Kohler 301 bore size and piston clearance

Does anybody have a reference for the stick bore size for a Kohler 301? Mine has started to run erratically and blow a bunch of smoke through the crankcase breather so I think a rebuild is in order. When I had the head off last year I noticed that there was an awful lot of clearance around the piston however there was not a wear groove in the cylinder wall. Is it possible that someone had this bored and used a stock piston or is this normal?

Thanks,
Mike

Due to the rod angle it is common for the bore to ware more perpendicular to the crank. From the description you are giving it sounds like it's time to have it bored. You can look in the technical section of this forum and find a Kohler manual you can download for free that will give you the specs you are looking for.
