HDS 2185 Clutch Question
 

Hello Everyone,

A little back round...I ran this tractor for two years liked it and then the clutch burned up taking out the oil seal. I took the clutch off put in a box and stashed it in my garage....eh somewhere. Can't find the thing now and I can't read the serial number.

Anyway, I ordered the seal and the clutch that serves my memory best. Installed them today. Looks like the right clutch as it lines up with the other pulleys pretty well. The clutch appears to just slide on the shaft with a spacer behind it and a bolt, lock washer and big retaining washer in the front. Clutch slides under a piece of angle and that seems to be it. Best I can tell the angle iron is all that keeps it from spinning. The bolt holes in the back plate of the clutch don't line up with anything that I can tell.

Have I got it right?

You really need to figure out where your tractor falls in the range of serial numbers. There are three different models in the 2185 line, and they use two different PTO clutches depending on the serial number. The one that uses the little angle bracket to keep it from rotating takes a different clutch than the other two that use a hexagonal pin. Here is a link to the Cub Cadet parts page showing that clutch. If you can't read the serial number can you read the model number? It looks like that will also verify which clutch is correct. If you have the correct clutch how you installed it would seem to be right.

I apologize for the lack of pictures. Everything in the diagram is there and seems to be in order. I was just surprised there wasn't more to keep the clutch from moving.

I've gotten to the point that I just sit back and keep quite. Not my tractor, not my problem. I'll let the members figure it out. It's 5:00 O'clock some where. :beerchug::beer2::beerchug:

OK If your PTO looks like this then all that keeps it from rotating is a piece of angle.

The 2185 used 2 different style PTO's as Group44 mentioned. The other 2 are round and have a stud that screws into the front of the engine to stop the PTO from turning. Gotta go now my cocktail is getting warm.:beer2::beer2:

Well shoot, didn't mean to cause headaches. Not having the serial number I had to take a chance on my memory for the part which is not usually a great idea. I'm a decent backyard mechanic, just don't see this kind of stuff everyday. The story does have a happy ending as the tractor works fine now.
