Kind of stumped

I might be trading my 582 for a 682 but the guy says it's red and made by mtd..mine is by ih

Is he right or wrong? I llovemy 582 but need something bigger to mow with

cubby102 06-24-2015 01:54 AM

Yes he's correct. It should also have a black front and rear axle. Rear axle can be eather cast iron or aluminum. Red ones were sold at ih dealers and yellow were at cub cadet dealers.

Well i havent seen it yet. Said has the the series 2 kohler twin. Would i be down grading since everything I have is ih or upgrading. Has 50 deck and i have 44

cubby102 06-24-2015 02:41 AM

About the only real difference between the two the then the series two would be the paint and if it had a aluminum rear diff. Which personaly I've never had a issue with. Cut just as well and are just as usable as the ih built one. If it is a real early one it may have the cast rear which in that case the only real difference is the paint... personaly I like 582 better then 682s. But I'm quite fond of gear drives.

BigB87 06-24-2015 02:45 AM

Me too but i rarely use my 582 other than when at shows drive it around to see things

I guess I'm missing something because I'm not understanding.

The 582 is a 16 hp gear drive and the 682 is a 17 hp hydrostatic drive.

The same mower decks were available for both machines. And with the hydrostat transmission demanding more power to operate than a gear drive transmission, your 582 is just as capable of a machine as a 682.

Besides hydro/gear drive transmissions the only other real difference between the two is the 682 has a Kohler engine where the 582 has a B & S.

So how come you think there is enough difference that you want to trade?

J-Mech 06-24-2015 03:16 AM

Hydrostatic transmissions do not take more hp to run, they do not transmit as much hp to the ground. Hp efficiency is the difference.

My only thing is that its mtd not ih...everything I have is ih or ji case. Love kohlers but my 582 is the first red cub i ever got. I dont mow with it just show it at shows. I mow withbmy 1650 and its a power house...guess my thing is how reliable are the series 2 kohlers cuz ive never owned one

BigB87 06-24-2015 03:29 AM

Plus the guy wants to trade me even. 682 for my 582..

Yosemite Sam 06-24-2015 03:43 AM

OH MY GOD, Once again I've worded something incorrectly and was busted by the correct police.
