Tiller Gear Box
Need some advise from you members in the know. Bought 2 new mule drive adjusters from a good member and a AX144 belt from Napa. Put them on and when I checked every thing out, it seemed there was a small amount of jerking noise coming from gear box. Holding one pulley and turning the other pulley, there is a little play. Took the cover off the gear box and it seems most of the play is between the gear and the pin on each shaft. Not a lot of play but it concerns me. Does it need to have the pins replaced? Will the tiller being hooked up make a difference? All advice will be appreciated. Thanks and have a great day.

Bob, I had the same issue on my tiller gear box.
I had a machinist friend of mine make me a new down shaft. Jeff in pa makes them as well as http://www.xtrememotorworks.com. One thing you could try is to replace the key stock. I would have done that if my down shaft would have been in better shape outside the gear box. Didn't do anything to the side shaft and it tightened mine up great. |

And I sell new gear box bearings, seals and gaskets.

Tiller Gear Bob
Thanks for the help. The pulleys looked like they would be difficult to remove. I decided to replace the lube in gear box and then hooked the tiller to my 149. Adjusted the belts and all jerkiness is gone. Will try it like that and see what happens. I now know where to get the parts if I should need them. Thanks for your input and have a great day.

I'm assuming your tiller gearbox is the same design as my thrower gearbox. If it were mine, I would atleast replace the keys on the gears like Adam said. It may sound better now, but too much lash can take out the gears....and they are expensive. You can replace the keys by taking off the cover and removing the snap ring and sliding off the gears, no need to disassemble everything. :beerchug:

I sell furnaces and build fun little transitions...
Sorry, felt left out of the "i build" and "i sell" conversation. Carry on!! |
Thanks Bill,
I didn't think the gears would come out that way. Have a great day. Bob |
