1200 starter Bendix Drive Removal
 

Howdy folks. I have a question about removing the nut that holds down the starter bendix drive (starter is off the motor, and not disassembled). I only see one way to keep the shaft from moving when trying to back off the nut. If I push the washer and spring towards the nut, I have enough room to put a pair of channel locks on the shaft to stop it from turning. Is this the best method? I don't want to booger the shaft, but don't see another way. Also there is not enough threads sticking out past the nut to see if it is a left hand thread. Any advice on the method is appreciated. I'd use an impact. Threads should be such that when the starter engages, it tightens the nut.

The Shaft is hardened,
channel locks won't damage it, @ least that has been my experience.
As John says, use an inpact.

Thanks guys. Yea I have been out for a while, had some things goin on that differed from cub/tractor stuff. Fortunatley I have other cubs and another "other brand" that serves well. Thought about the impact as well, I'll do it that way. What's funny, is that the manual tells you to tighten the nut at a specific inch/foot pounds, but gives no way to hold the shaft steady. I'm thinking they are holding the armature with a strap wrench when it is apart.

On the grass again! Man, what a difference a new bendix drive makes lol. I used a 3/8 drive impact to remove the nut. Actually only took about 15 minutes total. Apparently I have needed it replaced for two seasons, as it was not turning over very well, but good enough to start. Now, it spins like a top! Thanks for the advice! Now on to my 1811 that needs the same thing. TB
