129 speed control & fuel?
 

On the old 129, the speed control lever has a great deal of slop and it appears to be getting worse. it looks like these lever handles are no longer available.

Before i create even a bigger mess, is the handle just carefully pryed off? if I do get if off, other then attaching a small vise grip (I saw this somewhere), any suggestions on a repair or replacement?


The other issue is the carb that seems to be leaking some gas. Again before ripping into this blindly, I'm guessing there might be a float of some sort that stops flow into to the carb?

Any suggestions or general advice or direction on either issue would be greatly appreciated!

Rob good used speed control levers can be had from the sponsors at the top of the page. As far as carb leaking fuel I would just pull the carb and get a rebuild kit. Sounds like there maybe dirt in float seat holding needle valve open. :beerchug:

I had a tough time getting the lever off my 149 also. I got the set screw out OK but the splines on the inside had gotten messed up so it didn't want to pull up off the shaft. I removed the steering wheel. Then I drilled a hole in the center of the lever on top so that I could put a socket head bolt in to press against the top of the shaft. Put a bearing separator under the lever and hooked it up to a puller. That got it off. When I put it back on I drilled all the way through the lever and the shaft and tapped it for a 3/16" bolt. No more slop. As far as the carb goes like Kelly said, rebuild time. :beerchug:

Nice photos! So the speed control lever actually came off relatively easily but the set screw less so. After drilling it out and retapping, it may hold for a bit although your idea about going straight through the shaft and continuing through the other side sounds like the final cure and probably where I'll end up next.

Regarding the carb rebuild, is there any sort of complete rebuild kit that might be available?

Rob a rebuild kit can be had at any NAPA store. There is not a lot to a rebuild kit. A float seat and new needle valve and a few gaskets. Not a complicated job at all. Biggest thing is making sure it is super clean. :beerchug:
