K321A vs K321AQS idle speed
I'm doing some minor work on my 149 and 1450 and noticed the Operators Manual and Service Manual state widely different idle speed specs for the K321A and K321AQS. The K321A spec is 1,000 RPM and the K321AQS spec is 1,800 RPM. Both engines sound fine at 1,000 RPM but at 1,800 RPM the 1450 sounds like it is idling way too fast. Is the 1,800 RPM spec wrong in all the IH 1450 manuals?
To add to the confusion, the Kohler Service Manual, the Carb Reference Manual, and K321 Owners Manual all say 1,200 (not 1,000) idle RPM and 3,600 RPM max no load. BTW - I have both engines running at approx 3,350 RPM max no load, and am using a digital photo tachometer. |
idle 1000 , no load 3600

Personally I'd do what Kohler said. They built the engines so they know whats best for them and their limits. I hate the k301a vs. the k301aqs.
(the k301a doesn't have balance gears and the k301aqs does) but the k301aqs might not have the balance gears if it was rebuilt and they were taken out. But they aren't near as bad as the shaky 16s. Mine on my JD 316 jiggles like there's no tomorrow. |
The later A's had balance gears.
1800 is too high. |
