1440 Briggs 14hp on the floor..now what?
 

Guys,
Well I did what Sam and others always suggest.....pull the engine, it's easy and give it a good cleaning and check it over.
i pulled it because its a tractor I don't know. I bought it last fall and the engine did start and run as long as I provided gas down the carb.
My question is very simple.....now that it's on the floor what should I do with it?

I know the basic cleanup but what else? I was surprised to find the engine cooling fins clean and no mouse nests any where. I did notice that the air intake screen over the flywheel was completely caked and plugged. I suspect it's overheated in the past and the old prior owner shut it off and bought a new mower for his wife. He told me it started blowing oil but I see no massive oil spill anywhere on the block.

Any suggestion will be appreciated. I plan on removing the fender pan and do the fuel line replace from back to front with a new filter, etc. I've already done all that with my other 1440 so I'm familiar with that but i've never had an engine sitting on the floor before.

I would get the engine running sitting on the floor and without pouring gas down the carb. You have a fuel solenoid on the carb that has to have 12 volts on it to open the jet for the engine to run.

Once you get it running, you can evaluate where to go from here. If it's smoking, you may no more than head gaskets and that's likely if the engine has gotten hot.

I put 12 volts to the solenoid wire while I was grounding it and heard nothing. I think Sam said once that one should hear a click sound.

Does anybody know if this is a good price? I found them from this price to $99. ouch!

Yes, you should but it could just be stuck. Take the solenoid out of the carb and clean the plunger end. You can test it before you re-install it.

I removed it and cleaned as you suggested. Applies 12 volts and ground and nothing. Lew sent me a link to an Ebay offering for $55 so I jumped on it.

Cut the plunger off with a pair of cutting pliers and screw the solenoid back in and it should run. I bought a brand new Vanguard last year and it came with a plug instead of a solenoid. It can't cause a problem if it's not there. :biggrin2:
