Love those yellow machines

Long time lurker here and elsewhere - I've learned a lot from you all.

Some weeks ago I was riding around on the 19-year-old Murray (don't laugh, that little fellow has worked hard all its life) and sort of had an epiphany. I don't like the look of the new stuff on the show room floor; don't think they're good value for the money. The old Murray seems to be designed to wear out; I've been announcing for about three seasons in a row that it's on its last but somehow it manages to come back yet again.

I'd seen a couple 147s on Criag's List and it occurred to me that two "bad" ones could make one "good" one. Not sure that was a good idea; I've since seen a couple on the the list that are in much better condition for about what I currently have in these two. Anyway, here's a photo (assuming it works) of the pair with the Yanmar (which is too big and heavy for general mowing - it IS good for grading the drive and moving snow.) The plan is to declare one as "it" and start using it taking parts from the other or scaring them up as needed and then restoring the other.

The one on the right runs and mows; the one in the middle still has the original clothe wiring which is pretty badly rotted out. After spending some quality time with the starter motor, I did get the engine to turn over, and after some work on the points did get it to run briefly. The carb is off soaking now. It also needs tires, the one won't hold air even briefly which makes it a nuisance to move. It has the electric lifter, but I don't know if it works yet since the wiring is in such shambles.

The one that runs has had some TLC on the steering, but needs more. The deck is missing the pully covers. No lifter. And I've replaced the front wheel bearings but the spindles are pretty worn. It will cut some grass though! I have some hy-tran, a filter, and some oil so it'll get some maintenance before it's ready for general use.

So here's a shot at the only pick:

I see a lot potential in those 2! What they don't have you might find here or from the sponsors. :beerchug:

Welcome to OCC! Those 147s look good. 147 was the most hp you could get in s narrow frame, I'm sure you will like them.

Welcome from another "new guy"! But be careful, having hung around gt's for a while, "parts tractors" usually don't end up that way!

"It's just too nice to part out" or "If I buy just a couple parts, this one will run as well!"

Next thing you know, you have 3, or 4, or ... well, you get the idea! :beerchug:

So YOU'RE the one buying up all the 147s in the area!! LOL

Seriously, welcome to the forum! I'm just east of KC, near Lone Jack.

I agree with Shrewcub, both are going to be fine tractors in their own time. And heck, the 147 is a very unique tractor being the only NF that was modified to hold the 14hp engine. So I'll leave you with a phrase often heard by many women from me....."Nice pair!".

Welcome to the forum. I'm looking forward to reading about your progress on both of your 147's (and future cubs :biggrin2:) real soon!
