Front axle swap ?

I'm in the middle of a 127 restoration, and the left side of the front axle and the steering spindle is egged out and shot......

my question is, Has anyone updated their narrow frame to a wide frame front
axle? I have a 1650 parts machine, I knew the spindles were different but
wasn't aware the axles themselves were that much different (wider) .

Is the outside front wheel width the same between the narrow frames and the wide frames?

I plan to do a wf axle on the 124 I'm going to build.

well olds45512....Since this post and plan didnt pan out to be something commonly done on a narrow frame like i had hoped, hurry up and do yours so i can know if the column rod to the spindle needs to be shortened or the WF one will work fine before i paint it in the morning.. haha

My 147 has a wide frame front axle from a 782. Looks better and i think it steers better. these are old pix, right now she is tore down, getting all new Hydraulics, ports, 3pt, lift ect. also changing paint to IH demonstrator look. didn't like the electric.

the 147 looks great with the WF axle. I was worried about the measurement distance difference between the NF steering column and the WF spindle , but I'm assuming you used the 782 connecting rod to the column and it worked. which is good news for me , thanks

+1 It looks awesome! Heck, even the home made stand looks awesome.

I see the muffler has a bracket to the frame. Is this the common mounting method? (I am wondering because if motor mounts are rubber there would be movement in those and the muffler mount might cause high stress if mounted rigidly). I am asking out of ignorance here, someone enlighten me.

On the narrow frame cubs and early wide frame the oil pan was bolted directly to the frame rails. It wasn't till the quiet lines were introduced did IH use the rubber iso-mounts.

A few years ago, I put a Wide Frame axle in one of my 122's.

IIRC I had to use the WF drag link, the axle itself went right into the axle saddle with no problems at all.

It did cause the front of the tractor to set up about 1/2" higher than the original axle did.

As far as width goes, yes, the WF axle is wider, but if you use wide WF wheels, the overall width is virtually the same. You can also use skinny front wheels and tires.

For what it's worth, I like the looks of the WF wide wheels a lot better than NF wide wheels.

I wasnt able to make it work with the WF drag link , however the longer of the two NF rods i was able to adjust to the right spot to turn the same distance both ways ...anyway, i got it together
