1864 Problem Child
 

My problem child has been sitting most of the summer. Been using the 2165 since she runs so well after the rebuild. I've decided that I'm probably just gonna buy a brand new engine for the 1864 but I want to take one last swing at it because it has to be something simple. For those that cant remember, its blowing oil into the breather housing. So much oil that it overwhelms the carb and chokes it out. This is after a ton of work was done to the tractor. Head gaskets, coils, fuel pump, etc. The tractor wasn't run for more than a few hours after this work was performed. Is it possible that it blew a head gasket already? It never got hot as the engine was cleaned up when it was removed. The heads were sanded flat on a glass surface plate and everything torqued per manufacturer recommendations. I guess what I'm asking is, is there anything else other than a head gasket that could possibly be making this thing blow oil that I'm not considering? None of that breather/filter assembly on top of the engine was replaced but based on the amount of oil that comes out of here, it seems to all be working. LOL. Any thoughts? Ideas?

Rings could be bad.

I know some people think that a leak down test is a waste of time but maybe that could point you in the direction of the problem. I picked up a pos tester at China Freight pretty cheap and have used it a few times.

Looks to me like there's an oil gallery under the breather cap that the Oil Sentry sensor uses to measure oil pressure. It's right next to the breather filter. If the gasket were to not seal properly the oil would go right up the tube and into the carb. Maybe first thing to do is to remove that cap and see what's going on.

Can someone explain how this crankcase breather works? The idea is to relieve the air pressure in the case without losing oil, correct? I guess I just don't understand how it functions.

Assuming the head gaskets are fine since they were just replaced and the engine has maybe 3 hours on it since and it runs perfect other than blowing oil, would it make since to just replace all of those breather components and see what happens? What do the reeds do and do they go bad?

I have a new filter, reeds and gasket in my shopping cart. Grand total of $24. Im willing to risk 24 bucks if it could possibly fix my tractor. Remember, this tractor was seriously neglected by the PO and this is one part of it that I havnt been into yet.

I could be way off base here but Ive gotten a bit of oil in the air box from the beginning. Is it possible that there was a problem in the breather all along and since it had a bad head gasket, there just wasn't enough pressure before to push as much oil as it is now?

Do you have a copy of the CH service manual?

Although total different motor, I had a kt17 that was blowing oil pretty bad through the breather hose into the air cleaner. I pulled the breather cap and little flapper piece to allow it to breather had hardened and a piece broke off. I replaced it and no more problems so I definitely think it could be a similar problem.

Crankcase pressure pulses. The reed keeps it from pulsing. The filter is supposed to catch most of the oil to keep if from puking into the air filter housing. Pretty simple.

Yea, i agree just do it. I put in a new filter, reed and gasket. The gasket comes off kind of hard. When you scrape it off be careful not to get any material in that area where the oil runs down, that's what I did I guess. Air filter is dry on mine. Hopefully it will work for you the same.
