Haban Sickle Mower ID and help

Hi Guys,

I have a Haban Sickle Bar Mower that was purchased new with a 1963 model 70 cub cadet. Unfortunately I had to dig it out of 6" of leaves and pine straw where it had been resting for about 15 years. The owner said it was in operating condition when parked. It's pretty rusty and stuck but I think it's salvageable. It appears to be complete. The mounts are still on the tractor.

I have no experience with a sickle mower and have several questions that I need some help with.

The ID tag is hard to read but I believe it says model 40202.. does this seem right? I see that some have a letter suffix but I don't know how to ID mine.

Are parts available for it? especially the cutter bar or knife blades?

I know they are sought after by collectors but how well do they actually work? I have a long ditch out in front of my business that I would like to mow with it. Do they work well for ditches?

Any info, comments, links to manuals, pictures greatly appreciated!!

Once I get it mounted I will leave it on the tractor. It will be a dedicated machine just for mowing the ditch and under the fence.

I've been soaking it in penetrating oil for several months now. Any tips on getting it freed up and running?

Thanks in advance for any help! :beerchug:

Sam,

A manual would be most helpful.

I'll shoot you an email

I found some info elsewhere that indicated it may be a 402 A. What are the differences?

Thanks :beerchug:

I'm not sure about what is different. You may want to down load this.

I have an 402 A .
A few things different are.
front mounts are bolted on the axle.
the long bar that attaches to the tractors rear hitch is 1 piece.
There is no solid guard on the right side.

Thanks for the info Sam and Lew,

Mine has the one piece shaft, no guard and bolt on front brackets, so it must be a 402-A.

I was figuring it may be an "A" since I know it was purchased in late 1963. The guy says he has all the original paperwork and manuals, but he hasn't been able to find it.

His dad bought the whole package new in 1963. He remembers bringing it all home from the dealer. A 70 Cub Cadet, Haban sickle mower, 38" IH deck, Brinly sleeve adapter, Brinly bottom plow, Brinly cultivator, and an IH blade. Remarkably it was all still together. He later bought a complete 10hp Kohler and replaced the 7hp

you may want to look here for cutter bar parts, I'm running their blade in a 7ft IH balanced head mower with great results.

John,

Thanks for the lead.. the knives and cutter bar were the main part that I was worried about finding. If I can get it freed up im sure I will need some parts from these people. Glad to know they work well.
