Implements (including A-42A thrower) for a 100

My son-in-law recently gave me the 100 that his Grandfather bought new. It does not have the creeper gearset. Along with the 100 I have a mower, a dozer blade, disc and a plow.

I've read 100 pages on the Implement thread and have learned much, but also have questions.

I'll start with what I don't have and that is a snow thrower. There is an A-42A for sale locally that the owner says is 25 years old but still has paint on the auger and had not been used much. Price is $275 or best reasonable offer. From what I've seen here, that might be a little on the high side.

Can the 100 without the creeper gear manage this thrower? It seems that 1st gear is just too fast to navigate and to throw snow effectively. Will changing the sprocket or pulley give the auger enough speed so I can drive the mower slower through the snow?

Finally, does a 100 without creeper really have the power to plow?

Welcome to OCC! Congrats on the getting the 100, single family owned machines are special.

I believe a creeper is necessary for use with a thrower or tiller, you don't want to ride the clutch to crawl along. I don't think speeding up the thrower will make any difference in its performance when paired with a tractor with no creeper. Creepers can be bought as can throwers, since you were given the tractor, spending a little money to suit your wants seems reasonable. Personally I think 42" is too much thrower for 10hp, others will disagree. I would look for a 36" thrower (and a creeper). $275 for a lightly used, complete qa42a is reasonable to me. I've seen plenty in poor condition advertised for $250. As far as pushing snow, 10hp is more than enough. Even with weights and chains, you will run out of traction before you stall out. I have made piles as high as my car with my 8hp Original (no creeper). :beerchug:
