IH Cub 70 Cant shut off

Hi to all. My 88 year old friend has a 1965 cub cadet 70. With the Kohler 161 engine. It was smoking badly so he sent me the engine to rebuild. After much searching, I found the correct rings (small bore) in the Midwest and rebuilt the engine. About 1 month ago we reassembled the tractor and it ran great. My friend uses the tractor to haul his trash cans out to the road and back again. Last week he mentioned he hauled the trash and turned off the key and the engine wouldn't shutoff. Found out the starter was turning the engine over. He is trying to fix the machine and wanted to know what was causing this. I figured a bad starter button or a stuck contact in the VR. I don't have any time right now to help but wanted to give him some ideas of what to look for. I would appreciate any guidance to get the trash moving again. Thanks, jim.

When my 102 did this it was in the voltage regulator. Usualy a quick knock on the regulator would make it stop for me.

Cubby 102, Thanks for the reply. When I get some time, I will pull the VR and clean the contacts. Jim.

Where in California are you? I am in Felton which is near Santa Cruz.

Not many CCs out here.

Bob, I am in San Luis Obispo. I am helping a friend get this tractor running. Now it runs so well, he can shut it off.
BTW, I have work crews on Hwy 9 just west of Felton right now (9-21-15) Where the Hwy is closed down. Jim.
