Trouble with 1872

Had a good start to the mowing expedition with the 1872. Everything worked fine until I stopped the mower to go across the gravel driveway to the other side. Went to start the PTO and nothing...
So drove back to the house and tried it again. It engaged, but I noticed the charge indicator went to discharge. Shut the PTO off and the charge indicator went to charge...
Well figured it worked so went back out and finished the mowing, but as I was I was also noticing the charge indicator was staying down on the discharge side, and occasionally would go up as far as center.
Shut the PTO off to come back home and again the indicator went up to charge. When I got it parked, shut it off and tried starting it, and it fired right up, so it wasn't a dead battery.
Any ideas? Field coil? But if it was the field coil, wouldn't it not engage until it cooled down? That's the way it was on my 782 when it went out.
I didn't check anything out as of yet, didn't have time today, but would appreciate any ideas of where to start looking tomorrow.

I had intermittent PTO problems on my 2082. It SHut off but usually come back on. It always worked by the time I got back to the garage so testing with a VM didn't help much since I couldn't re-create the problem.

I swapped the PTO switch from another super and no change in behavior.

I ended up going through the wiring and cleanup/firming up the connections as best I could. That circuit goes through many junctions/switches/points of failure.

So far so good so good with fingers crossed.
goodluck.

It's a poor connection at the ignition switch, Todd. BTDT. I've got one doing that off and on too.... just too lazy to fix it. I just open the hood, reach in and wiggle the plug on the switch while watching the charge indicator. Correct fix would be a new switch and pigtail. :beerchug:

John,
You make me laugh, we think alike, big fires get put out, and mostly for other ppl.
The small things where we know what is going on, don't bother us.
take care "kid" ;)

Not even a little. :beerchug:

My 2072 has the same problem. I have to use a jumper wire sometimes to get the fuel solenoid to open on the Vanguard. I've been meaning to simplify the harness and fix the problem for quite a while. I will get to it one day. :beerchug:

You Da Man:beerchug:
Will get on it soon. For me to get at it I need to remove the Haban first, or I can't get close enough to work on it. My reach ain't what it used to be:biggrin2::bigthink:

If you can pull the right side of the tractor up to the "deck" you made for getting on it... you should be able to take the side panel off and get to it. If not, yeah, you'll have to pull the Haban. If you have forearms like Popeye, you may need to pull the fuel tank. :bigthink:

I had a similar problem on my 1872. It would come and go without rhyme or reason. It wasn't until after several instances of this that one time I finished mowing and shut the tractor off with the key. This time the low oil pressure light came on and stayed on. Remember the key switch was off. As I was getting on the tractor, I guess my knee nudged the forw/rev hydro control and the oil light momentarily went out. I took the side panel off and found the flat metal plate that allows the hydro lever to move side-to-side into the forw/rev slots on the dash had some sharp edges. These edges were shaving the insulation off of some wires that were routed into that area. Depending on how far I moved the lever CHANGED which wire was being shorted to ground by the metal plate on the hydro lever. One time it was +12V, the next time it was the oil pressure circuit. It had actually worn through the copper wire so a section was missing.
