2072 Electrical Trouble
 

I was mowing with my 2072 when it suddenly died just like if I had turned the key off. The engine will crank but won't start. I thought the ignition switch might have failed then started testing the terminals & I don't have any fire to the switch. So then I started thinking the solenoid failed so replaced the switch & the solenoid, still nothing. I have fire on the battery side of the solenoid but not on the starter side or on the pole. The only fire I have on the switch is the terminals for the headlights.
The next thing is to pull the harness & look for breaks. Anyone have any suggestions on what I could check?

If the eng. will crank you have to be getting power through the solenoid. If that is the case, then unplug the 3 wire connector going to the eng. and check for spark when cranking, this will eliminate all your safety switches. If no spark you have a bad coil. If you do have spark it is a safety witch problem.

I think all of the safety switches are disabled. I'm getting ten gone to crank by jumping across the solenoid, it won't crank turning the key.

IF...the yellow wire going to the engine Mag is grounding out, it will cause the condition you are experiencing. With a VOM or DVM, measure the resistance between the battery negative terminal (ground) and the yellow wire. If that measure is or near zero ohms, then somewhere on the circuit of that yellow wire, it is grounding out.
