129 Hard Starting
 

Hey guys I am looking for some help/advice as to why my 129 might be starting "hard". It turns over fine but intermittently it will suddenly stop turning over all at once with a "bang" almost as if something is catching? When I get it started it runs excellent I just don't know what's going on with the starting issue. Any help is appreciated.

I would put in a new Autolite 216 spark plug, file/sand the points or put in a new set,set the timing,pull off the cylinder head,clean and de-carbon,put on a new Kohler head gasket and torque it 3 times.Also,check the spark plug wire where it goes into the coil to see if it is corroded. Use a wire that is actually a stranded wire,not graphite.I believe all these things will help it start and run better.

From what you describe it sounds like your acr isn't working like it should. I don't know enough about it to give you any info. Others with more experience will help you.

automatic compression release. its on the cam shaft and it opens the exhaust valve slightly while your starting the engine so it can roll over easier, if its not functioning properly, it can make starting the engine a real pain.

Ok. Yeah a real pain dosent describe it:bash2: if that's what it is what is the fix?

You can take the cam cover off martin to see if the spring is still there And not broken on the cam gear. Or take off valve cover and watch the valves, exhaust should just open slightly spinning it over by hand before it opens on the same stroke Good time to adjust the valves too while you're looking

Martin, when it get's to the point where it won't turn over, is it on the compression stroke? Does it do it at times right away, like when you first turn the key, then just won't go?
If you turn the engine by hand backwards enough and try the ignition, does it turn over then?
How about with the plug out, does it turn over easy? I know it's a lot of questions, but it'll help with knowing if it's the ACR.

Todd, it does it on the compression stroke and dosent do it right away it turns over fine at first every time. I haven't tried turning the engine backwards by hand. I did also try turning it over with plug out and it dose seem to turn over easier but still acts up.

Doing it with the plug out seems not right. When the plug is in, and it stops turning over does the starter keep trying, like the belt squeals? All I'm asking is do you think the S/G is working properly?
