Transmission Fluid Filtering
 

When did IH/CCC begin adding a filtering system to the Hydros? At the risk of asking stupid questions, with IH describing their Hydros and Gear Drives as "self-contained units", why do Gear Drives not need a system to keep the fluid clean? Why are Gear Drives systems less sensitive to metal debris, etc.? Does that mean that Gear Drives are more bullet-proof? Is it all about the pump?

Model 123, first hydro. And yes, it's all about the pump! We all believe they are both somewhat bullet proof for sure

Cub Cadet has used Hydro Filters from their first hydro run tractor [123] through present.

The gear drive tractors have less critical parts and is normally not an issue.... "IF".... the owner performs normal & routine maintenance.

All the hydros had a filter.

The gear drive trans-axles are the same as in a larger tractor or even that of a car or truck and don't need a filter.

Just like with anything else, the hydrostatic transmission needs a filter to keep particles out of the pump, not so much out of the gears, especially since the suction tube is in the bottom of the case.

Don't be thinking that the hydro trans-axles are wimpy because they have a filter, it's my contention that you or anyone else would have a very difficult time breaking one. I've been abusing the one in my first Cub for more than 20 years and it's still going strong. My Brother can't even tear one up... and he can bend a crow bar in a sand pile!

Thanks gentlemen...I'm looking at an 1806 with 900+ hours and the Hytran has never been changed. Plus with no filter, bit concerned about the condition of the transmission - but it sounds as if I probably shouldn't be.

I wouldn't worry, just change the fluid and go.

The pump on the hydro's has some very tight tolerances... any kind of grit or foreign substance can be detrimental to the pump.. that is why they have a filter... The gear drives need clean oil also but the tolerances aren't nearly as tight so they can stand dirty or incorrect fluid without as many concerns..

I wouldn't worry for one second about that 1806.. just change the fluid and be done with it..
