Hard starting 682
 

I have 682 with the Kohler KT17 series II. During warmer weather/mowing season the tractor starts right up and runs great with a quick turn of the key. During the cold weather/snowblowing season its a chore to get it started. I literally takes 30 minutes or more to get it started. I have actually just got out the shovel a couple of days because I didn't want to deal with it. Basically I turn it over until the battery is a weak, then put it on the charger or jump with the car for a bit and turn it over until its weak again, then repeat many times. Once its finally starts it runs fine and will re-start fine.

This started last winter but attributed it to a weak battery. The battery was replaced at the end of winter and it was fine all summer so I didn't think much of it. However, as soon as winter arrived this year the same thing happened. My thought is possibly the starter but thought I would get some opinions before replacing anything. I do get a high pitch squeal at times when it is close to actually starting (I assume from the starter). This only happens when its cold and starting hard.

If you suspect the starter, take it out. Take it to a reputable repair shop for analysis. Or, jump right into a new starter, considering the use this starter has gotten.

I am assuming, that your timing, spark plugs & ignition system is correct and in good order.

My 782 didn't like starting until I replaced the points and condenser.

Plugs, wires, coil and battery have all been replaced. Is the timing something that would cause it to start hard when its cold but start and run good otherwise? The weather is not very pleasant so I was trying to avoid taking things apart unless I have good reason to believe it is needed.

Does it cranks a lot slower in the winter vs the summer? Just wondering if your cold hydro fluid is preventing it from spinning fast enough to fire up. I've read where some hytran substitutes are actually a slightly higher viscosity and could cause more resistance in winter.

If you have replaced all that stuff, I would set the timing using the static timing method next. Have you verified the choke is closing when you pull the knob?

You didn't mention the points and condenser being replaced...

If you really believe it to be your starter, then pull it, disassemble, clean and re-install. Made a world of difference for mine.

Points and condenser have not been replaced by me. The condenser "appears" to be newer but I know that doesn't necessarily mean anything. I have owned the tractor for 6-7years so its at least that old. To be honest I pretty much forgot these were part of system as I've never delt with them on any engines. I will definitely check the points and timing. Also since they are fairly inexpensive, I will probably just replace them soon.

I should probably clarify my concerns with the starter. There is nothing specific to indicate the starter is going
bad, but I know a failing starter can cause issues and most of the other items have been replaced. Now I have a fee other things to look into now.

Yes the choke is closing (visually checked). As far as it cranking, its hard to be certain but I would say it seems a little slower. However it still seems fast enough that it should start.
