782 gas in engine head

We have an old 782 that there is gas leaking into the engine head, and last time we tried to start it it nearly caught on fire, shooting flames out of the carb. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First, welcome to OCC...... :Welcome2:

These are two conditions we commonly see. (A) Have the Carb cleaned and rebuilt. And, (B), look at the Fuel Pump to see if the internal diaphragm is cracked or broken.

Welcome to the forum.

Also use Search feature; several threads on the topic of gas in the crankcase.

Good reason to check the oil every time before you crank it. If it looks slightly fuller than the last time, check for gas. Assuming you still have the KT17 engine be advised that those engines had a nasty habit of getting gas in the oil while sitting under the shed when they were brand new.

I have a IH 782 and it had similar issues with fuel in the head and it turned out to be the fuel pump.
