Flying lawnmowers

Yeah I know this is a Cadet forum, but maybe the mods will allow a thread on some real oddballs. Anybody remember the Toro Fly-mo (not sure about the spelling) from back in the late 70's-early 80's? Basically it was a hovering push mower with no wheels, fiberglass deck and a 2 cycle engine. I've had one for about 25 years that a friend gave me. It's a little scary to use as there is no safety bar to kill it if you lose your grip and it will honestly move in any direction--try mowing a hillside, it wants to drift down the hill. Also, it doesn't do too well in normal grass--thinking it would do best in uniform, dense Bermuda. I had a brother-in-law tell me golf courses used to use them. Today I got my new copy of Lawn and Garden Tractor Magazine. There was an article about a turf maintenance trade show. There was a picture of Jacobsen's booth and it appears they are now making the same basic machine.

If you ask me its still too dangerous to use. Anyone here ever had any dealings with these things?

Years ago I worked a summer at a golf course that had one. My buddy who worked there longer than me said they would tie ropes to the handle and walk along the tops of the creek banks and cut the grass down by the water. I never saw it in person, I cut the banks with a string trimmer.

Yup, BIL worked at a golf course as a kid and used one to mow banks. Chopped his foot up real bad with it, like bones chopped!
