Safety Features are off
Hi Guys
I wonder if you can help me again. As a reminder I have a CC1023RD, 2007, and several of the safety features are no longer functioning. I'm hoping that those of you familiar with the electrical system might be able to point me in the right direction. My cutter, and thus the PTO, will operate when the bag is not present, or when the bag is in the up position, and also when the mower is in reverse. Is it a fair assumption that this most likely narrows it down to the PTO switch itself, since several safety features have failed at once, i.e. the system doesn't know the PTO is engaged, and if so, is the PTO switch easy to remove in order to test it? A quick look at it today seems to suggest that it is difficult to get to the area underneath it. but maybe, hopefully, it can be removed from above. I'm going to take a proper look tomorrow, but a little advice in advance will be helpful. Thanks in advance. Regards Sutty |

Thanks for trying. I looked too and it's hard to find info. I'm in the UK, so that could be why. I always struggle to find stuff on it, but yes, that is the badge model. The serial number is 13AB51CJ603 which may help, but I can never find any technical info when I need it, apart from parts lists from suppliers, which to be fair is often enough.
The PTO switch is operated by a paddle, part way down the operating handle shaft, and the switch sits on top of the floor plate where the shaft passes through. I felt underneath, and can't get my hand to the back of that plate, which is why I'm hoping it can be removed from above. I was hoping it might be similar enough to US models, but of course if people don't recognise the model I can see that it will be difficult to assist. Here's a picture, in the hope it may help. Thanks Sutty Attachment 78884 |
I don't think (not certain) that a model like that was offered here in the States. From the same tag that you got the Serial Number, there should be a Model number.
Please advise or snap a picture of this tag and post it |

I took this earlier for the purposes of the serial number, and you can see, amongst other numbers, it does say CC1023RD.
Attachment 78895 I also think this might be the switch: 725-04038 http://www.motoruf.com/n/partslists....9&art=13678581 Looks like it's a snap fit, but I'll need to get my hand in underneath to squeeze the tabs, and from first feel I can't get my hand in. I guess I'll have to see. Off to bed now, but will check in again tomorrow before I give it a try, in case anyone has any tips. Thanks Sutty |

OK, I was hoping I could find a Wiring Diagram. I'll still keep looking.

Thanks for trying.
Okay, so the switch I found online was correct. Here is mine. Getting it out wasn't that easy. There was no way to squeeze both clips on the back, but I at least could press the clips on one side with a long broad end screwdriver, and fortunately that was enough to allow me to lever it out from above. The bad news is it seems to work. Attachment 78901 Attachment 78902 Attachment 78903 As you can see two pairs are marked NC, and they test NC. On pressing the button they both go open. Actually, maybe you can't see, because I know the resolution goes down a lot when you upload, but trust me the side by side pair do say NC on them. The pair at the top isn't marked, but then it must be obvious that it is NO, if the others say NC, and it is. Also it goes closed when I press it. So, unless the switch does something very un-obvious, it is working fine, or at least it is whilst it's in my hand. It's not impossible that disturbing it and moving it has made it work. So I'm going to liberally douse it with deoxit, and put it back in to see what happens. If the fault is still there then I don't think this is the culprit, and my initial logic was not sound. I'll report later. Thanks Sutty |
Well that didn't take long. Re-fitting it was easy, for obvious reasons, it's just a press in fit from above.
I also learned something else, to prove that at least one set of contacts on it does what it should when in operation, in that I cannot get off the mower with the engine running, when the brake is on, if the PTO is engaged. It stops the engine, as would be expected. Not that I should have been able to engage the PTO with the engine still running, since there was no basket, but being as I could, at least it cut out when I stepped off the mower, with the brake engaged and the PTO running, which is probably the most important safety feature. I suppose I could have done that test before I removed the switch, but maybe that would only demonstrate that one set of contacts does what it should. Anyway, I think I have now ruled out that switch. It performs one function correctly, in operation, and on the bench it behaves as it is marked, to the best of my ability to test. Stuck now, since I haven't a clue how the basket present, or open, operates. I know where the reverse contactor is, I'm going to take the wheel off now and test if that switch creates a contact. Thanks Sutty |

What you have is a DPDT (Double Pole - Double Throw) switch. The unmarked terminal are most likely the "C" (common) terminal. See attached diagram for a better understanding. The NC (nomally closed) contacts are in what is referred to, as the "relaxed" condition. Continuity should be between C & NC on both sides. Depressing the button or tab, then continuity should flow between C & NO on each side. If you don't get any part of that, then the switch is bad.
