Best Car In 2017?
 

It is getting time for me to look at a new car for my wife. The last one I bought her was in 2006, and it is a Volkswagen Jetta TDI. I called the VW place and was told that they don't have a diesel car any more. That Jetta has 291,000 miles on it and still runs like it did when I bought it. Everything else is falling apart, the headliner and plastic pieces on the inside. I think that drivetrain would go to 500,000 miles. So, ny suggestions in the high 20's?

FWIW, I think your choice of the VW TDI was a good one. We seldom worked on them when I had my shop and had at least 3 customers with them.

Your good Johnathon. That is the one car I have looked at. The mpg is around 40 mpg where the VW was 50.

I'll add another one for the Subaru. AWD and 30 MPG is hard to beat.

By now you should know the answer is "Whatever makes Mama happy". Go ahead , say it out loud---"If Mama ain't happy, then nobody ain't happy".

Seriously, I'm not so certain there is such a huge difference in vehicle quality anymore. First thing I look at is what are the needs to be met, then a style, then safety--but it all must fit within a price range I am comfortable with.

Just to toss this out, never assume the HUGE dealerships are offering better deals than the tiny ones. I won't go into details but I was involved in buying 3 new full sized Chevy trucks last year. The first we hunted around looking for a deal and got one on a truck that GM had decided hadn't sold fast enough (big rebates on that vehicle), It came from a big dealership. Soon after we needed another. Began hunting for another deal went to a dealership with 85 full sized trucks on the yard, spent 2 hours there and they couldn't come up with anything to show us, much less come close to the last deal. Went to a dealer ship with only 7 or 8 trucks and he found another promotional vehicle (the original dealership couldn't come up with anything we liked). When the need arose for the third truck, the first dealership, with about 40 trucks and the little guy, with 7 or 8, were neck and neck in offering yet another great deal. Moral of the story, any size dealership can play ball if they want to.

By the way, I'm not a car guy but for a mommy-mobile I vote for a Ford Edge, nice looking car and I've known a couple folks to have good luck with them. Also I have a lot of family driving Kia's. So far so good with all of them, but none have enough miles to speak of longevity.

Don't buy new, I'm the oddball here, go certified used Lexus for your wife. I love my Chevy truck but when it comes to cars, the big 3 suck. I love my 1999 GS400 with close to 300hp and 28 mpg on the highway. It was the fastest 4 door production vehicle built in its day. I have near 200k on it now and will probably get at least another 100k without any issues. You could eat off of the engine because they just don't leak any fluid unlike my Duramax at 10k when the dealer told me to shove it if it doesn't leave a puddle under it. GM doesn't consider it a leak unless it does. A certified used Lexus or probably a lot of other brands have a 3 to 5 year / 100k warranty that is actually better than a 3/36 new car warranty.

Too bad VW lied about their emissions and got busted. I had a 1980 Rabbit and it was a great car. Good luck and let us know what you get.

I love the diesel cars, but they get very limited in the 30k price range. I have even considered buying an electric car, because they claim they can do 125 miles before charging? She is a Nurse and works about 45 miles round trip. The rest is just the norm, going to the grocery store and little runs of that sort. But you really can't find much about them online, and I like to read before I buy. If there's an Electric or Hybrid that would suit her needs, I would look at them. I haven't even considered a Subaru, but will look at them. I guess you guys can tell I don't like buying Gasoline!:bigthink::beerchug:
