Hit And Miss Engines
 

Do any of you guys play with Hit and Miss engines? I have always wanted one, but don't know enough about them to make a good purchase. I would like to have one to pull behind my Original and make popcorn? :Explode:

1913 Associated 1-1/2 hp Busy Boy. Air cooled, hit and miss governor and make and break ignition.

I just picked up a 1905 Olds Gasoline Engine Works 5-7 hp

I played with them many years ago, and found them to be very enjoyable. Unless you plan to permanently mount them on a trailer, smaller and lighter are much easier to move and have fun with. 1hp - 3hp are about the limits that two grown men can move.

They are fun. Neat to watch all the "internal" stuff that you never get to see on conventional engines. I've got a 1905 2hp IHC vertical, 1914 4hp IHC Famous screen cooled (throttle and governor), 20's 1.5 hp Deere that crapped the timing gears 20 years ago and I never have bothered to fix, and a dishpan flywheel Lauson (I think 1.5 hp and pretty certain its Hit and Miss--been waiting to restore for the last 10 years). If I can find any pics I'll post them.

If you want to stay with IH, search for Famous, Tom Thumb, and type M. There was a guy named Larry Trammel in Chapel Hill that horse traded in them for years, don't know if he still does. He dealt with runners only--great for folks just beginning in the hobby.

Tractors are more my thing. I got this one running and then life just kind of got in the way of the time needed to finish it. It's not much different than a 2cylinder throttle and governor flywheel engine.

If any of you guys has one you want to sell, pm me here. I would like to get a small one to put on a trailer and pull behind my Cub. I don't know anything about them, but sure would like to have one. They are really cool.

Try the guy I mentioned in Chapel Hill, he used to run an ad in the N.C. Agricultural Review. On the web he used to go by The Engine Merchant, or something like that.
