Size matters ---

Bigger is always better right? Thought you guys might get a kick out of a size comparison between the piston and wrist pin from a 14 hp Kohler K321 and the same from a 400 hp Cummins NTA-400 diesel. The Kohler is 3.5" bore, the 400 is 5.5" bore. I have the Cummins in the shop doing a complete overhaul and the Kohler parts were nearby. All that shiny aluminum makes for a nice six pack!

:beerchug: Nice, the big wrist pin looks heavy !!!!!

Yeah, it is. It is a solid billet of hardened steel and weighs about 3 pounds!

Pretty impressive but here's some info to go with the big difference in size.

Compression comparison

Kohler K321 ( flathead , gas)
K321/M14 (14hp) - 6.6:1, 7:1 or 9:1 (depending which head is used)

Cummins NTA-400 diesel ( turbo charged diesel )

13.9:1

That's why the big difference in wrist pin weight. Much more torque with a diesel than a flathead gas engine.

Did you ever see the metal lathe made out of those pistons?

Some guy sells a book detailing how to do it.

I think he has a drill press, and milling machine, also,, all made with the piston.
The wrist pin hole holds the bearings for the machines shaft,,,

That would be an interesting read.
