Help, 782 lift limit cam insert
 

Guys wondering how to fix this. The lift limit cam insert on my early CCC 782 has broken in half. I've been using the tractor on a snowplow and towing a wagon but I'd like to mow with it, and I'll need the cam to set the mowing height.

When I got the tractor it had a fine thread bolt through the cam itself. I bought a knob on ebay so I could adjust it while using it. In the process of unthreading the bolt, the conical insert separated from the frame (I suspect it was cracked already, it didn't come undone with much difficulty).

I asked R Houtz at Red Power Roundup about it last summer, he said the insert was serviceable, but he wasn't able to get his laptop going to look the piece up. I've tried Partstree myself but don't see that it is a serviceable piece, although I may not be looking in the right place.

I have an 1811 and 782 frame available, the 1811 one is better shape for sure. I'd rather not do a frame up rebuild if I don't need to.

I was going to say 'frame up rebuild' (with lots of pics), not because you cant weld it, but because we like seeing rebuilds...

I thought about welding it, but I'm no welder, & it looked to me like it'd be difficult to do, although maybe for an experienced welder this wouldn't be any trouble. I posted here to get some ideas. One concern I have is keeping the conical taper 'clean' enough that it is still effective with the limit cam and torque knob.

I also wondered if it is possible to remove this insert....the spare 782 frame I have is pretty well done, so I could try to knock the insert out of that, although it would have to be tacked into this tractor anyway (assuming it is even doable to begin with).

LOL at this....but you know, the last few months watching Zippy & CCguys threads on their '82s/1811s do have the wheels spinning in my head. This 782 is my favorite, although my wife would probably want the red one restored first.....tough decision, right? LOL

I believe the part number for the cam insert is 711-3009 . I was able to locate one of them for one of the forum members for his 982, then ship it to him. I had gotten it from Scott Madson who was able to look it up. If I remember correctly, the person who I got the cam insert for, also sent me a blueprint for that part so I could have one made if I needed it in the future. Now I just need to remember where I put the blueprint for safe-keeping. The cam insert is welded onto the frame from inside the tunnel.

why not just use one from a quiet line that just tightens in flat against the frame
