982 Rear PTO Switches?
 

My recently acquired 982 (986) has rear PTO, with a switch on the dash tower (to the right of the ignition switch), plus a switch on the tunnel cover. Both are wired into the harness; the one on the dash does not seem to do anything (it is supposed to be a directional switch). I have not traced the wiring in detail to figure out what is going on - anyone ever see an installation like this, or a decal like the one on the tunnel cover (pictured)?

I have the manual and have read it. It does not address my question or situation, of three PTO switches - the "third" being mounted in the tunnel cover.

It's only supposed to have two. Who knows what the PO set the third up to do. Your going to have to figure it out on your own. It should have been obvious after reading the book that someone had modified your tractor, as it does tell you where the rear PTO controls are located, and how to operate them.

Wow, I know it does not match the book... anyway, back to my basic original question, has this type of rear PTO switch installation been done before, and where did that decal (which is to the right of the tunnel cover mounted switch) come from, in the second picture? It is OEM-looking.

I'm sure I will figure out the wiring, that is not really a concern at this time, was just asking for any insight or experience from others. FYI, the tractor is model number 145986399.

I added a link my last post with the wiring diagram for the 982. Your may be a bit different as it is a CCC built, not and IH built.

According to that model number, it is a red, CCC built, "986" which means it was the fully optioned machine.

That sticker is likely a dealer installed deal. It doesn't look right to me though....


There is no way that anyone will have any experience that will be exactly like you have. You have a machine that was modified by someone in a way other than it was built. The chances that someone has a machine altered in the exact same way is very, very, very slim. We've seen lots of toggle switches mounted on the tunnel cover. How it is wired, and what it does is something only you can figure out. My suggestion is not even to try and figure it out, rather hook it back up the way it was designed, with factory replacement parts or equivalent.

Thanks all. I agree it looks like something dealer installed, and the decal on the tunnel cover is actually confusing.

I used to own a 1914 that had the third switch on the tunnel cover. I can't seem to remember off hand how they worked. I notice that your 982 has a CCC serial number tag, so its probably set up the way that 1914 was.
