Where to buy a top link for my 1872
 

I say it's a category 0 and most everyone says they have what I need - but it is never that easy. Most want to sell me a top link with 5/8" bore on both ends but my 1872 is set to take only a 1/2" bore link at the rear of the tractor. Seems strange because the other end is 5/8". To complicate it further, there is not enough room to use a bushing in the 5/8" bore ball swivel, at least not on the Cat 0 ends I've tried so far. I'm sure some of you have found a work-a-round or source for the top link so will you help a fellow out? Thanks for any suggestions on where I can get one. TIA, Steve

Your top link bracket should have 5/8 holes, I know cub used the same style top link bracket for baggers but I'm not sure what size hole they had.

Drill the hole on the link bracket, or live with the pin being a little loose. It won't hurt either way. That 3pt did use a 1/2" pin at the bracket. It's not a big deal.

My 1872 (and my buddies 1872) does not have a bolt on bracket for the top link. The top link is pined between two weld on tabs - it's factory. There is only one 1/2" hole per tab. Enlarging the hole to 5/8" will not allow for the 5/8" ball socket end. Moving the hole rearward will put it very near the edge of the tab. Yes the tabs can be cut off and larger ones welded on but Cub built it this way and they had top links that worked with it this way - I just want a top link like the one furnished with this 3 point w/PTO. Maybe somebody has a used link they will sell to me.

They don't make them Steve. Good luck finding a used one. Although there should be a million out there for all the people who had them and never once used the 3pt.

I think the easiest solution would be to buy the top link and also buy a weld on ball end that's half inch, cut off the 5/8" ball and weld on the 1/2" ball. If done properly it will look fine.

Yep, the top link bracket is a different size on the OEM SGT rear hitch plate and a standard cat 0 link will not fit. Cub uses a pos cheap aluminum end on the small side of the link. I think I broke all but one or two that I had. The Ruegg hitch uses the standard top link that you can get at TSC. You will either have to make a new end for your link or grind the welds off of the hitch plate and drill it bigger and weld it wider apart.

My GT's use the standard size top link.

Maybe a heim joint may work,you can always grind off the ball from the stem. This one is 7/16x1/2 wide, but they come in many sizes.

Make your own. You can buy threaded tube and rod ends from these guys. They come in right and left hand thread.
