MTD sucks!
 

Today I spent over 6 hours trying to help a member with a PTO problem on a Cub 7264. He needs a NLA PTO for a vintage 2002 tractor, yes I said 2002. This was a high $$$$ machine. Part is NLA, seriously 2002 and you can't buy a PTO for it, you have got to be kidding me! Quote from the snotty women I talked to "It's an old machine and it's obsolete" 2002 obsolete, really. I asked who made the PTO and got transferred to the tech department, that was a joke, I was told it was an MTD part, BS, called Messicks who did some research, it was made by Warner, called Warner who confirmed that they made it but MTD told them that they don't want anymore so Warner no longer makes them and has no parts. So here is a guy that basically owns a boat anchor. Now I know that we normally don't get into the SCUT tractors but our member hoped that OCC could help, he gave me all the info to try to help including pics, I couldn't ask for more so I went the extra mile to help. These people don't deserve to be in business. I think my 1864 may just be the last Cub I will buy. Green and Orange are looking better. Yes I'm PO'd :BB&YS:

Here's a thought although a long shot. Any chance of getting all of the specs of it from Warner and putting it out to some of our machinist members? Not sure what piece he needs or maybe his existing one can be reapaired but there's some talented guys here that have access to some cool machines, CNC etc. or does he need the coil itself? I remember the other thread said something about it but haven't looked yet.

Edit: I looked at the pics of what it looks like and is an electric clutch inside a transmission wow that's involved but as stated maybe it can be fixed or made.

You may be able to get a dealer to get in touch with the parts depot where the unsold ones were sent.

As some of you know, I am in the HVAC/R business. I work on equipment from new to 40 yrs old. I have found in the last 10+ years, that the mindset with manufactures is that once equipment gets to that 10th year, it is their belief that the end user should buy a new piece of equipment. Seems MTD is following this trend. There are times, I spend a lot of time researching parts, for situations just like this. It is very frustrating to match up the misguided mindset of the OEM and the expectations of the end user. :bash2: :angry:

Lew I called the parts depot and they have sold all of what they got from MTD. I'm sure it could be reverse engineered and I'm sure with the talent we have here on OCC it's doable but the design SUCKS. Who puts an electric PTO inside a transmission, only MTD would do something like this.

Think about it this way, you can get parts for a Cub O built in the 60's but not for a 2002 machine? SCREW MTD! :BB&YS:

Planned obsolescence to sell new stuff. If the old lasts forever no one buys new. As newer machines are introduced, they must meet more strict emission standards so the government endorses this practice as well.
Stories like this need to be widely publicized. When John Q. Public stops buying the shit they pump out, mfg's will have to change their ways or go out of business.
At my age, my old Cubs will last my lifetime with a little TLC. No new crap for me, I'll stick with the old stuff.
