450 snowblower auger gear stripped
1 Attachment(s)
Last Tuesday was blowing a heavy wet snow only 8", did my drive fine. Went to neighbors and got almost done and the augers quit spinning. Figured just need a shear pin. Saw they were fine so hooked up the snow plow to the 102 and got the other drives done. Just took the auger gearbox apart today, worm gear appears to be aluminum. I had it filled with EP-O grease, is there a better option for these gears?

Yes, there is a brass replacement gear.
You can find it cheaper than from CCC, if I remember right. I had to replace mine a few years ago. I think it cost me like $35. Just search around: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...+gear&_sacat=0 I run synthetic gear oil mixed with wheel bearing grease mix. I mix it to a consistency of pudding. Works good for me. Also, IIRC, I added a grease zerk to that box so that I could add grease if necessary. You can remove the vent to add some oil to the mix if needed. Replace the seals, and silicone the box together. Don't bother with that cork gasket. |
Thanks for the replies fellas. I found the part number on parts tree and found a brass replacement gear on Amazon for a little under $50 out the door, hopefully we won't get any more snow I'm ready to mow grass. Don't want to unhook the 450 from the 982 until its operational
