I am on jury duty. Uhg! The process is interesting. I was picked yesterday and proceedings have started today. Got my phone back at lunch. I am lucky, my employer pays me my wages instead of the NY state guarantee of $40 per day. And it is only half the distance to the court house than to my job. Those are the bright sides. I have never been picked before. And no, it ain't like TV.

Are you at least allowed to tell us what the trial is for?
|
No. Or maybe afterward. It ain't too exciting.
|
So glad I can never be drafted for that!! Plus once a LEO cuffs them... they are guilty right??? : - )
|
Just stand up and smiling say " hey judge ole buddy, hows it going? "

I would actually like to sit on a jury. I've been picked but when lawyers ask you if you have friends or relatives that are police officers, which I do, you are usually dismissed. It goes like this:
Lawyer-"Do you have friends or relatives who are police officers?" Me-"Yes". Lawyer-"Do you think you can be impartial in this matter?" Me-"Yes". Lawyer-"Thank you. Your Honor, we dismiss this juror." |
Good for you Steve, keep your head up it's a worthy cause. Yeah I've been through the process several times but never picked. The last one was awful. This scum bag robbed a local hair salon and set a couple girls on fire, one girl was pregnant. He also went to another gas station and shot and killed the people running the place. It was something else being in the room so close to this monster as I was part of the final selection but didn't make it through. Wish I did. But, justice was served at the end.

Been picked for both jury and grand jury duty here in lovely upstate NY, and got selected and served at both. Usually 20 minutes of interesting followed by 2 hours of boredom 6 hours a day for a few days. The good news Steve is that once you're called and appear, selected or not, you're off the hook for 4 years. Serve on a trial and you're off the list for 10!

We were out of the court room as much or more than we were in the court room today. The DA himself is running the case for "The People". Seems disjointed at times.
Every juror agreed that seeing this process just proves to us why the court system is so backed up. Doc, I thought I read something about 10 years before the next time. That would be nice.:beerchug: :American Flag 1: |
Jury duty....what a kick! I've served before and you are lucky to get $40/day....I got something like $12 or $15!! Then, in order to get paid by my employer, I had to surrender that tidy sum to my employer because there is no "double dipping" in the state I resided in at the time. The last time I was called in to be interviewed for jury duty, I had the time of my life!!! A couple of people WANTED to serve and asked how much THEY WOULD MAKE a day for serving, while another guy intentionally tried to get kicked off the jury and said he couldn't serve because he kept odd hours by staying awake playing video games until 5 or 6 in the morning and then sleeping until 4 or 5 in the day or sometimes not sleeping at all. He went on to say that he was not employed (wonder why?). Then he went on to say it was against his religion to serve. When asked what religion he belonged to, he replied, "Self Religion! The religion in my heart." I was in tears.....tears laughing, thinking about Mr. Stadanko on the Cheech & Chong skit, along with Sister Mary Elephant. Hanging on the edge of my seat the entire time!! Finally, the judge scorned him and said he wanted him out of the courtroom immediately!! Another lady was deaf, so they screamed at her that she was dismissed. It took them 5 tries to convince her she could leave the courtroom and all the while, I'm tearfully laughing.....thinking, "Hell, just open a window and yell it toward Moscow, where they will stand a better chance of hearing you." It was one of the most memorable days of my life!! I hope you have the time of your life, too, and such a memorable experience!! It is really nothing to be taken lightly and a civic responsibility........but man, I got a free show and got paid to watch it!!! :beerchug: It just doesn't get much better than that!!
