Cub 682 won't start

My 1984 cub cadet 682 has always started right up. This year I just get a click when I turn the key. I got it started a few times with jumping it thinking the battery was dead. Now it won't jump or anything and stuck sitting in the yard. Any ideas on how to to fix this or any ideas? Please help. Could the battery just be that far gone? I even tried jumping it with my truck and nothing

Take apart and clean the battery connections, connections at the solenoid and the ground at the frame. Might not be a bad idea to pull the battery and have it tested also, but it's likely a bad connection.

Sorry it's a 682. Tonight I have gone over and cleaned all the grounds and checked every connection and everything seems good. I still get just one click noise when turning the key. Is there a way to jump the starter to bypass the starter solenoid? Just trying to narrow it down. If the battery was totally fried would it start while being jumped? On my voltmeter I'm getting 12.6 volts at the battery. What are the syptoms of a bad starter solenoid? Thanks for all the help guys.

That's a fine video is your looking for a bad wire. But at this point, he needs to test some other components, and there are much less time consuming tests he can do to find the issue. Plus, there are only 2 wires that would affect the starter that are on the (+) side. Not too difficult to figure out which one it is without doing a voltage drop test.

Ok... so you still need to do some tests, and confirm what you hear clicking.

First off, the PTO must be in the off position. Are you sure that you aren't hearing the PTO click on and off?? If the PTO is on, the engine will not crank. Check your switch.

Second, confirm it is the solenoid you hear clicking. You can fold the seat up, lock the brake pedal down, put a hand on the solenoid and try starting it. If the solenoid is clicking, you'll feel it.

Third, if it is the solenoid, take a meter and put it on the large output terminal of the solenoid. See if your getting 12V on it while trying to start. If not, check to see if your getting 12V on the small wire running to the solenoid. If your getting 12V on the small wire, but not the big one that runs to the starter, the solenoid is bad.

Yes it could still be a bad battery.
No, I will not tell you how to "jump" across a solenoid. The fact that you asked how to do it means you don't need to know. No reason to burn something up doing it wrong. Actually testing components takes only seconds.

What are the symptoms of a bad starter solenoid?? Ummmmm it clicks and won't start. But that's also the same symptom as a PTO switch in the on position. It's also the same symptom as a bad connection. So... keep testing.

Thanks for the help guys. Tested voltage tonight on the battery while turning the key and the voltage dropped between 8-10 volts. Got a new battery and made a larger ground wire to replace original and it fired right up. I never knew that a battery could be so far gone that jump starting it wouldn't work.

OP, Your answer to the problem, was posted here...
Good call Jon, guess you didn't need to go through your other post #5.:bigthink:

Yes, it can.

Never assume that an OP actually did what you suggested...... I should have asked before I took the time to write post #5 huh.....

Easy fellas. Sometimes when ur frustrated it's easy to overlook some small things. That whole battery thing still blows my mind.

At least it was an easy fix and you got your 682 back in action again. More often than not its little fixes we overlook on these things
