PTO Clutch repair - 1864
My PTO clutch kicks out about one lap of the yard. Apparently it's worn to the point that it cannot engage once it expands from heat.
My Cub uses the 5218-6 clutch which is the non-adjustable version. Looking at it, I think I can close the airgap by machining the center hub where it contacts the front (outer) bearing. My question is how to know how much to take off. Anyone else here tried this? BTW, the cheapest clutch I found was $125, which is probably what I'll end up doing. But I did find the same clutch here for $21.99! http://www.newarrivalecshop.top/inde...oducts_id=4644 I don't have the courage to try it though ;) |
I'm not a PTO expert but I doubt wear is your problem.
I'd suspect the clutch fields are shorting or open when they get hot.......... Low battery voltage.............. Open in the clutch circuit.............. Not necessarily in that order. A clutch expert will be along shortly. |
I admit I did not check for open circuit when it shut off. I did replace the switch as it did not feel right. You do have a point though, as when the mower spindles stopped cutting, it was much like cutting power as opposed to slippage.
From that I had read about the older clutch type, when they got hot it indicated the air gap needed adjusting. I can see about .010 wear in the friction surface compared to the untouched area near the hub. Of course, mine in't adjustable. Maybe I'll connect a battery and a light bulb to the coil, and set it on a hot plate for a few minutes. In the meantime, the grill surround came apart when i removed it. I'll be patching it back together. I don't supposed there are spares available? |
I have been using Xtreme for replacement PTO's
http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=45466 New grills are available from Cub. You can get a kit with the head lights or just the grill shell. Edit: 759-3773 grille w/round lamps kit $156.99 931-3178 grille $119.82 I have been buying my new Cub parts from these guys http://www.cubcadetpartsnmore.com/ |

Good to know - Thanks. I'll probably still try to repair this, but I doubt I'll be happy with the outcome. I may just buy that clutch from Xtreme. |
Some reading for you

I really need to rebuild this who tractor, but right now the shop is full and too many projects stacked up. So for the short term I need to get this thing going and then look at a bigger rebuild come winter. |
f it is relay driven the relay is probably weak and can't hold the contacts together
